Greenwashing VS Sustainable

Environmental awareness is becoming more and more important, and along with it, interest in sustainable approaches in business is growing. However, is it really as clean as it seems? Let's take a deeper look at this together.
Today's world pays more and more attention to environmental awareness, and interest in sustainable business practices is growing accordingly. However, it is useful to distinguish between a true sustainable approach and greenwashing, a marketing technique that creates the appearance of environmental friendliness without real effort: the use of environmental slogans, labels, symbols of "green" living, and attempts to attract attention through artificial efforts.
Sometimes "greening" is done unintentionally. This can be the result of a lack of knowledge or a lack of clarity about the worldview, values and goals that truly drive an organization or brand.
Instead, Sustainable brands don't just look green - they make sustainable changes in their operations, from certified production processes to the use of renewable resources. They demonstrate a commitment to long-term change and transparency in their relationships with consumers.
It's not what brands say that matters, it's what they do!

In 2018, Starbucks launched a "strawless lid" as part of its sustainability initiative, but this lid contained more plastic than the old lid and straw combination. The company did not deny this, but claimed that it was made of polypropylene, a common plastic that can be recycled. Critics were quick to point out that only 9% of the world's plastic is recycled, so the company should not assume that all lids will be recycled. In addition, the US exports approximately one-third of its recycling to developing countries, so it is simply shifting its responsibility to poorer countries.

Fossil fuel giant BP has changed its name to Beyond Petroleum and publicly added solar panels to its gas stations. In December 2019, an environmental group called ClientEarth filed a complaint against BP for misleading the public with its advertising, which focuses on BP's low-carbon energy products, while more than 96% of its annual expenditures are from oil and gas.

   IKEA was considered a beacon of sustainability for large corporations until June 2020, when the furniture retailer was linked to illegal logging in Ukraine. In a report by the non-governmental organization Earthsight, the timber certification scheme used by IKEA, the Forest Stewardship Council, was called an organization that "launders" the woodworking industry. It was accused of failing to identify sources of conflict wood for IKEA and take action.

It is not difficult to distinguish whether a brand takes specific measures to support the environment.
You should pay attention to:
•    Transparency about their sustainability journey
•    Availability of certificates for production processes
•    Commitment to tracking and working to reduce their carbon footprint
•    Specific actions to support and improve the environment

Remind yourself that each of us has a BIG part to play in the BIG puzzle of sustainable development.

Remember that the most fundamental thing is to learn to change your habits. Refuse from unnecessary things, reduce consumption, reuse, recycle and compost what is left.
